Hashtag It!

I don’t always do a blog post for Tuesday Tips but this one seemed to warrant one!

I’ve been busy in consults lately (and loving it!) and one of the questions I’ve received more than once has been about hashtags. I thought I would give a brief overview about hashtags and then announce a surprise at the end!

What are hashtags and why should I use them?

The easy answer- hashtags are one of the ways that help you to get discovered on Instagram (or Twitter but let’s focus on Instagram at the moment). Many people search for content, ideas, and new awesome accounts to follow via certain hashtags. Hashtags can also put you in the same category as others in your field, others who may want to get ideas on their social media account from yours and start following you. Lastly they can allow you to trend, putting you at the top of the grid when people search that specific hashtag.

How many can/should I use?

You can use up to 30 hashtags on Instagram. Some people have specific techniques about how many to use or not use. I subscribe to the targeted hashtag theory, which is that it’s more about quality over quantity. Targeted hashtags (meaning more specific hashtags, so instead of #hair I’d use #curlyredhair ) can have a lower number of associated hashtags, allowing you to be more visible. So I say use 5 targeted hashtags if you’d like, or use all 30. Up to you!

How can I find the best hashtags to use?

When searching for targeted hashtags, it will take a little bit of research and experimentation. For me, I’ve started setting one day of the week for research, and that’s been working out well (it’s not just for me but also for my clients). When searching for hashtags in the search bar, if you click on that hashtag, it will give you several more options at the top of the search. Check them out, see which fit your style, and have a lower number of tags associated (by lower I mean I generally stay away from more than 1M so myself or my clients don’t get lost in a feed). Some of it is trial and error, but checking weekly allows you to see what works and what doesn’t work.

I hope you’ve found these helpful! In today’s post I’m opening the forum for questions- so ask away!

Now for my surprise! One of my biggest goals for 2019 has been to start a newsletter. I’ve been trying to think of what would be helpful to have in my newsletter and one of the things (besides exclusive free social media tips) will be new hashtags to try (based on business category). I’m going to start out with my client’s categories, and if you have a different category in mind- let me know!

The newsletter sign up can be found at the bottom of any page on my website- all I need is a name and email and you are good to go. The newsletter will be bi-weekly so I definitely won’t be spamming your inbox.

When can you expect to see it? The newsletter starts NEXT MONDAY!

Talk soon!
